Looking Back; Looking Forward

2012: A Year in Review

A year for travel, finding myself, getting lost and finding myself again: by all accounts, 2012 was an incredible year.  In 2012, I visited Thailand, Haiti, Canada, China and all over the US.  I raised over $3000 towards yogaHOPE’s work in Haiti.  I studied metta, meditation and Thai yoga massage in Thailand.  I fell in and out of love, again and again, eventually falling into a deeper understanding of love (the only way out is to share).  And I returned to Boston to teach yoga full time.

In a year’s time, every aspect of my life has changed.  In many ways, 2012 has been about gratitude.  Before I left Boston for Western Massachusetts and later Thailand, I believe I took my community, friends and work for granted.  Not seeing the value in all that I had built for myself in Boston in the eight years since moving here in 2003, I left without really understanding what that would mean.  In returning home, I’ve found myself consistently grateful for the people in my life, the studios I teach, and the delicious and accessible food (read: Indian buffet).  By traveling, I reconnected to home, love and gratitude.

2013: Looking Forward

It’s often easier to look back than it is to look forward, especially over the course of a year.  As a yoga teacher, I set intentions on a weekly or sometimes daily level.  It’s a regular part of my practice.  So the idea of New Year’s resolutions sort of falls short, when you rededicate yourself to an idea or a direction on a regular basis.

In this moment, what sticks out for me is the idea of collaborative co-creation.  Perhaps AcroYoga is at the root of this intention, but for 2013, I’m aiming to be a participant.  In my interactions, in my teaching, in my relationships, in my writing, I aim to be a mindful collaborator (or co-conspirator) of awesome.  🙂

Sure there are specific goals, I’d like to work towards this year.  2013 will be the year I develop some control in handstand, the year I get my full straddle split back, the year I start that book idea I’ve had for a few years… But all of that will require deliberate co-creation with my body, with my support structures, with my mind and ego.  So that’s the aim.
